Depuis la nuit des temps, l’homme a toujours su garder un rapport privilégié à l’animal sauvage puis domestiqué. La mémoire de la domestication, reflet ancien de l’économie humaine, perdure au travers des objets à caractère ethnographique conservés actuellement dans des collections privées ou publiques. Telles sont attestées à partir du xve siècle les lunes ou lunettes fixées sur le bridel, sorte de treillage qui enserrait la tête du mulet. Ces plaques se sont plus largement répandues du xvie au xixe siècle. Ces modestes objets, dont les phalères protohistoriques pourraient être considérées comme des prototypes, contribuaient tout au long de leur parcours à la parade étincelante des convois muletiers superbement harnachés. Au soleil, le scintillement des disques de laiton révélait la nature commerciale de l’animal de bât. Nous présenterons dans cette contribution les thèmes des décors de quelques plaques appartenant aux collections du musée Ignon-Fabre à Mende.
