En pleine crise de la COVID-19, l’épreuve des confinements et la mise à distance d’autrui nous rappellent par défaut le rôle fondamental joué par les rites et les civilités dans nos relations. Cela prouve l’actualité des outils conceptuels légués par Erving Goffman. Appuyé de témoignages tirés d’une enquête et étayé par un cadre théorique issu de la microsociologie, cet article analyse les bouleversements introduits dans nos relations quotidiennes par la distanciation, les gestes barrières et le port généralisé du masque, œuvrant tous à « désacraliser » (en les déritualisant) les relations interpersonnelles.
