Abstract
Détruit en grande partie en 1866 puis, pour ce qui en subsistait, durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, le château de Tilly-sur-Seulles est essentiellement connu pour avoir été la résidence normande de François-Jean Orceau, baron de Fontette, intendant de Caen puis chancelier de Monsieur, frère du roi. L’édifice lui-même n’a en revanche que bien peu retenu l’attention. Le recoupement de diverses mentions inédites permet pourtant d’établir une chronologie des travaux, qui furent réalisés en deux temps, une première campagne ayant été menée après 1759 et une autre s’étant étalée des environs de 1770 à 1778. Il est surtout possible d’établir que les travaux furent dirigés à la fin du chantier par Guillaume-Martin Couture et que celui-ci succéda sans doute à Antoine-Mathieu Le Carpentier, et, ainsi, de rendre la conception du château du baron de Fontette à deux des plus éminents architectes français des règnes de Louis XV et de Louis XVI.
