Une des raisons pour laquelle Nadja d’André Breton constitue un texte emblématique de la littérature moderne vient du fait que le récit est accompagné de 48 photographies en noir et blanc ponctuant la rencontre entre le narrateur et une jeune femme. De nombreux critiques ont tenté de décrypter le sens de ces photographies et de les faire entrer dans différentes grilles de lecture avec pour objectif de dévoiler certains non-dits du texte. En se basant sur trois articles consacrés à la photographie dans Nadja ces trente dernières années, notre étude propose de démontrer comment toute tentative d’interprétation des photographies est vouée, sinon à l’échec, au moins à la confusion et à l’ambiguïté, et débouche en fait sur plus de questions qu’elle n’apporte de réponses. En voulant donner à son récit un caractère plus troublant, Breton a aussi brouillé les pistes et créé un système de signification qui lui échappe en grande partie ainsi qu’aux lecteurs. Interpréter les photographies insérées dans Nadja, tenter de les faire entrer dans un réseau plus global, revient pour chaque lecteur et chaque lectrice à projeter ses propres dispositions sur l’écran textuel et visuel du livre au risque d’aboutir à une lecture qui se caractérise davantage par ses aspects subjectifs que par la rigueur scientifique.
