Abstract
De la plongée dans le fonctionnement d’un pénitencier psychiatrique ( Titicut Follies , 1967) à la mairie de Boston ( City Hall , 2020), les documentaires de Frederick Wiseman sont considérés comme relevant du cinéma d’observation [ observational cinema ]. L’accent est ainsi mis sur leur capacité à donner un accès le plus direct possible à la vie des institutions américaines. L’approche intermédiale présentée dans le cadre de cet article vient contredire ce point de vue. Cela est fait en identifiant la présence d’appareils de prises de vue (appareils photographiques et caméras) professionnels et amateurs dans nombre de ces films. Ce phénomène de coprésence médiatique donne lieu à une réflexion sur l’imaginaire de la technique et, in fine , conduit à repenser la dimension politique de son œuvre.
