UV irradiation of tetrahydrofuran solutions of [CpMn(CO) 3 ] (Cp = π-C 5 H 5 or π-C 5 H 4 Cl) in the presence of the phosphanes PPh 3 or PCy 3 (Cy = cyclohexyl) and Ph 2 PCH 2 CH 2 PPh 2 yields the substitution products [CpMn(CO) 2 P R 3 ] ( R = Ph or Cy) and [CpMn(CO)(Ph 2 PCH 2 CH 2 PPh 2 )], namely, dicarbonyl(η 5 -cyclopentadienyl)(triphenylphosphane-κ P )manganese(I), [Mn(C 5 H 5 )(C 18 H 15 P)(CO) 2 ], 1a , dicarbonyl(η 5 -1-chlorocyclopentadienyl)(triphenylphosphane-κ P )manganese(I), [Mn(C 5 H 4 Cl)(C 18 H 15 P)(CO) 2 ], 1b , dicarbonyl(η 5 -cyclopentadienyl)(tricyclohexylphosphane-κ P )manganese(I), [Mn(C 5 H 5 )(C 18 H 33 P)(CO) 2 ], 2a , dicarbonyl(η 5 -1-chlorocyclopentadienyl)(tricyclohexylphosphane-κ P )manganese(I), [Mn(C 5 H 4 Cl)(C 18 H 33 P)(CO) 2 ], 2b , carbonyl(η 5 -cyclopentadienyl)[1,2-bis(diphenylphosphanyl)ethane-κ 2 P , P ′]manganese(I), [Mn(C 5 H 5 )(C 26 H 24 P 2 )(CO)], 3a , and carbonyl(η 5 -1-chlorocyclopentadienyl)[1,2-bis(diphenylphosphanyl)ethane-κ 2 P , P ′]manganese(I), [Mn(C 5 H 4 Cl)(C 26 H 24 P 2 )(CO)], 3b , The crystal structure determinations show a very small influence of the chlorine substitution and a moderate influence of the phosphane substitution on the bond lengths. The P R 3 groups avoid being eclipsed with the C—Cl bonds. All the compounds employ weak C—H...O interactions for intermolecular association, which are enhanced by C—H...Cl contacts in the chlorinated products.
