En 2016 s’éteignait Daniel Fabre, une figure originale de l’anthropologie française qui, après avoir marqué Toulouse de son empreinte, a poursuivi à Paris sa carrière de directeur d’études à l’École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS). La diversité des hommages qui lui ont été rendus depuis sa disparition témoigne aussi bien de la densité de sa vie intellectuelle que de la variété de ses implications institutionnelles. Après le colloque de Toulouse en février 2017, dont rend compte Daniel Fabre, l’arpenteur des écarts, publié dans la même collection, celui organisé dans la capitale en octobre 2018 entendait se concentrer – sans pour autant s’y cantonner – sur les années « parisiennes » de cet anthropologue, celles qui virent la création et le développement du Laboratoire d’anthropologie et d’histoire sur l’institution de la culture (Lahic). Ainsi les contributions rassemblées ici s’emploient-elles à mettre en évidence la singularité d’une posture d’anthropologue occupé à comprendre le phénomène d’institution de la culture, et, dans le même temps, engagé dans un dialogue de longue haleine avec le ministère de la Culture, ouvrant ainsi la voie à une anthropologie du patrimoine aujourd’hui florissante. Mais, au-delà de l’aventure lahicienne, les auteurs mobilisés embrassent plus largement l’ensemble du parcours de Daniel Fabre, afin de tirer les fils rouges qui le traversent. Repérant ces constantes tant du côté des objets que des outils d’analyse, ils soulignent la cohérence d’une oeuvre marquée par cette sensibilité profonde aux traces du passé et qui a fait de son auteur l’un des derniers romantiques.
