Abstract
Originaire de l’Aunis, Louis-Auguste de Rossel (1736-1804) est un officier de marine connu pour ses tableaux des principales victoires de la Marine royale pendant la Guerre d’Indépendance américaine. On connaît moins en revanche les journaux de campagnes qu’il a laissés comme officier du Grand Corps sous le règne précédent. Conservés aux Archives nationales du Québec, ces documents sont un mélange de livres de bords, de relations d’événements militaires (comme le siège de Louisbourg en 1757) et de descriptions à caractère ethnographique (notamment lors d’un voyage vers Constantinople). Sans être originaux sur le fonds, même si Rossel semble montrer un intérêt marqué pour les lieux et peuples rencontrés, les journaux maritimes de Rossel sont partiellement illustrés. Plus que par une plume souvent un peu sèche, c’est par le trait que le jeune officier de marine exprime un talent qui en fera le peintre officiel de Louis XVI.
