Abstract
This entry outlines the history of astrology in pre‐Islamic Iran, with a specific focus on the history of astrology in Zoroastrianism. It provides an overview of the sources of information on the development of views on the celestial world, from the period of composition of the Avesta (the collection of sacred writings of Zoroastrianism) to the period of composition of the Pahlavi sources. The entry devotes special attention to the Sasanian period (third–seventh centuries ce ), the only period for which we have indisputable evidence of the diffusion of astrology in the pre‐Islamic Iranian world. It outlines the main doctrines and sources on Sasanian astrology, and highlights the impact of Sasanian astrology on the astrological systems of non‐Iranian cultures in the post‐Sasanian period.
