Abstract

Amniotic fluid embolism (AFE) is a rare obstetrical emergency. It is characterized by acute cardiopulmonary distress and disseminated intravascular coagulopathy (DIC), occurring during delivery or immediately in the postpartum period.1 The pathophysiology of AFE is not well understood. There is emerging evidence suggesting that the amniotic fluid embolization to the pulmonary vasculature triggers an acute inflammatory response, ultimately leading to severe pulmonary vasospasm.2,3 This subsequently results in acute pulmonary hypertension and right ventricular (RV) dysfunction.
