El diseno de las politicas exteriores de los paises de America del Norte ha tenido que replantearse al comenzar el nuevo siglo. La hegemonia de Estados Unidos se enfrenta a la disyuntiva de actuar solo o bajo esquemas de cooperacion multilateral en asuntos de seguridad nacional y en regimenes internacionales; o la diplomacia economica de ese pais, que deja de lado un modelo de desarrollo sustentable que tenga en cuenta a toda la region. A partir del concepto de seguridad humana desarrollado por Canada, se abordan las perspectivas de la politica exterior canadiense y su desempeno en los organismos internacionales. Por su parte, Mexico se muestra en la redefinicion de su politica exterior, en particular frente a los fenomenos de la globalizacion y a partir de la firma de otros acuerdos comerciales internacionales ademas del TLCAN.
