Abstract
O estudo da cobertura da terra traz importantes contribuições, destacando, principalmente, a forma como a área está sendo ocupada. Este artigo tem como objetivo mapear as classes de solo predominantes e a cobertura da terra nos Planaltos Residuais do Extremo Oeste Potiguar. Para a elaboração do mapa dos tipos de solos, a base dos dados- IBGE, 2015, foi utilizado o software QGIS versão 3.8.3, cuja classificação seguiu a base do Sistema Brasileiro de Classificação de Solos (EMBRAPA, 2013). Para a análise das classes de cobertura da terra foi utilizado o Manual Técnico de Uso da Terra (IBGE, 2013). O trabalho de campo para validação de informações acerca das classes de cobertura da terra e das fragilidades e potencialidades dos solos frente à sua utilização. Como resultados, observou-se que a área de estudo apresenta predominância dos Argissolos Vermelho-Amarelo Eutrófico. No tocante às classes de cobertura da terra, destaca-se a maior representatividade da agricultura. Com esta pesquisa, denota-se a necessidade de um planejamento urbano e ambiental voltado prioritariamente para os solos, a fim de que haja o uso adequado e manejo correto, visando um desenvolvimento local com fins de proteção dos recursos naturais, sociais e econômicos.
