Le mouvement de l’école inclusive est aujourd’hui présent dans la plupart des réformes des systèmes éducatifs d’Europe francophone et d’Amérique du Nord. Il vise à plus de justice sociale, à travers la réussite de tous les élèves. Néanmoins, il n’est pas exempt de certaines tensions épistémologiques et théoriques pouvant faire obstacle à cette visée. La conceptualisation de la « diversité » soulève en effet des enjeux qui relèvent parfois d’implicites ou d’impensés. Par exemple, la mobilisation des marqueurs de la diversité met en lumière la tension autour du statut que la lumière projetée sur une population revêt au regard des effets de la catégorisation. De la même manière, elle porte sur le rapport entre ces différents marqueurs, leur hiérarchisation et l’invisibilité des marqueurs non mobilisés. L’objectif de cet article est de présenter un outil théorique permettant de cerner les enjeux autour de la conceptualisation de la diversité. Reposant sur une adaptation du carré dialectique de la différence culturelle d’Ogay et Edelmann, il propose, dans le domaine de l’éducation inclusive et dans une perspective critique et intersectionnelle, une grille de lecture élargie du rapport à la différence.
