Abstract
A dispatcher clerk sitting in an office in Canada keeps in contact with trucks over a triprovincial area via citizen&s;s band (CB) radio. A widow, living 30 miles from town on an isolated Australian ranch, yells into her CB that she is hurt and is heard. Television brings to living rooms everything from live concerts and ball games to a front-row seat inside Congress. Viewers are seemingly "right there," whether in the middle of a war or a courtroom battle. Such things are possible with telecommunications. The modern office has telephones, computers with modems, and copiers. When these are linked over telephone lines or via space satellites and microwave dishes, they make up a telecommunication system. Electronic mail (e-mail) is the term used to describe the transmittal of messages from one computer to one or more others over telephone lines. Local area networks (LAN) link computers to each other and also to printers.
