Les Journées mondiales de la jeunesse (JMJ) sont organisées tous les deux ou trois ans sous la forme d’une rencontre internationale de jeunes qui se tient à chaque fois dans une ville différente. Institutionnalisées en 1985 par Jean-Paul II, qui en a fait un des principaux leviers de sa « nouvelle évangélisation », elles ont été reprises à leur compte par ses successeurs Benoît XVI et François. La dernière édition en date a eu lieu à Panama en 2019. Étudier ces grandes fêtes itinérantes et globales comme des dispositifs d’éducation et de socialisation religieuses permet de saisir comment une institution confessionnelle, l’Église catholique, a cherché, depuis le milieu des années 1980, à s’adapter à la fin des identités religieuses héritées, provoquée par la « panne » des vecteurs traditionnels de transmission que constituaient la famille et l’école. Après avoir présenté le contexte dans lequel les JMJ sont apparues, cet article analyse les moyens qu’elles mettent en œuvre pour « transmettre la religion » avant d’évaluer leurs effets sur le court et le moyen terme. L’enquête mobilise la littérature scientifique existant sur le sujet, des entretiens avec d’anciens protagonistes et des informations recueillies dans des archives ecclésiastiques de Rome, Paris, Ottawa, Québec et Manille.
