Abstract
Dans la configuration actuelle de la sphère littéraire internationale et québécoise, Rita Mestokosho reste sans doute, l’une des voix les plus prometteuses de la littérature autochtone avec, entre autres, Joséphine Bacon, Naomi Fontaine ou encore Natasha Kanapé Fontaine. De sa lointaine Ekuanitshit où elle vit le jour en 1966, elle invite son lecteur à entrer dans sa géographie intime qui se déploie dans un passé douloureux et un présent prometteur. À ce propos, son recueil de poèmes Comment je perçois la vie constitue l’exemplaire illustration de cette corrélation temporelle. C’est parce que l’écriture poétique est avant tout le dévoilement intérieur que Mestokosho sent le besoin de passer par ce canal pour dire son Être profond. Ramenée ainsi dans sa plus grande transparence, sa poésie se pose d’emblée comme l’élément constitutif d’une quête existentielle qui marque toute sa création littéraire. Dès lors, comprendre l’œuvre exige subrepticement de revenir à ce commencement ténébreux d’où tout est parti. La poésie de Mestokosho est un puissant instrument de libération et de reconquête identitaire des peuples dominés, reconquête qui, à notre sens, doit nécessairement aboutir à un dépassement de soi et à une ouverture au monde.
