Reposant sur une lecture phénoménologique, les réflexions qui suivent veulent apporter une contribution exploratoire à une sociologie historique de l’expérience de l’oppression. Par le truchement de la figure de Jacques-Pierre Brissot et de William E. B. Du Bois, nous verrons comment la lutte pour l’application universelle des droits civils et civiques dans deux sociétés modernes occidentales (la France pré-révolutionnaire et les États-Unis post-Reconstruction) repose 1) sur l’expérience vécue de l’oppression d’une élite dissidente 2) sur une objectivation à deux niveaux, à la fois sur le plan des représentations intersubjectives et des discriminations sociétales. Nous montrerons ainsi comment cette élite, en se rapportant à d’autres oppressions dans le temps et dans l’espace, s’inscrit dans une tradition des opprimés et dans une lutte historique pour appuyer son propre combat.
