Abstract
This Sociology of Education course has two main topics. First, it examines how forms of schooling have spread into different social institutions. The criminal justice system and the business world, for instance, have both embraced types of education to an increasing extent in order to achieve their institutional goals. Second, this course investigates the emergence of various innovations within regular education. Older innovations such as Alternative and Free schools have been joined by the rise of private and for-profit schooling and homeschooling. Taken together, these trends illustrate how Aschool@ in various guises pervades our lives more than ever. We now live in a Aschooled society.@ To understand these two trends, we will examine many different examples of sociological research, and will develop a theoretical framework to understand why school forms are appealing to various social groups, from professionals to parents, and why they have such legitimacy in our culture.
