Improving the uniformity of steam chamber growth along the length of SAGD wellbore: a 3-D scaled physical model study

Abstract
Steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) is a thermal recovery process which has been proven efficient for in-situ recovery of heavy oil and bitumen resources in Canada. SAGD is now being tested in the shallow extra heavy oil reservoirs of the Fengcheng oilfield in western China. Unfortunately SAGD has shown some issues, the steam chamber does not grow uniformly along the length of the wellbore. This paper presents the use of a high temperature and high pressure three dimensional model to optimize the steam chamber's uniformity. Experiments were undertaken on 2 SAGD pilots in the Fengcheng oilfield. Results showed a relationship between the steam chamber growth and the crude oil production and 2 regulations strategies were developed and were proved to be successful in optimizing the uniformity of the steam chamber growth along the wellbore. The use of a high temperature and high pressure three dimensional model can help optimizing steam chamber growth in extra-heavy oil reservoirs.
