Abstract
Vince Coleman liked his job as a train dispatcher. He liked the hustle and bustle of the Halifax, Nova Scotia train yard. Out the window of the train station, he could see the Halifax Harbor and watch the ships come and go carrying a number of things. Halifax was a busy city in 1917, and Coleman was proud of his town and his work. The Halifax explosion was the largest man-made explosion in the world prior to the atomic bombs dropped on Japan in World War II. TIME magazine compared the power of the atomic bomb, Little Boy, to “seven times that of the Halifax explosion.” Halifax eventually became known as a premier care center for the blind. A blind relief fund was set up to help care for the victims, and surgery techniques were developed to help preserve as much sight as possible.
