Abstract
The University of Ottawa has over 30,000 students and has recently added a new interdisciplinary degree program: Globalization and International Development. A main area of concentration for this program is conflict and security in a globalizing world. The majority of students taking this class are expected to enter the diplomatic core, defense related employment or take a position with a non-governmental organization. This class is designed to explore the deviant nature of the power elite & globalization, and how this confluence produces a number of grey criminogenic areas. It also examines the current domestic and international regulations, laws and polices in place to police this phenomena. Crimes of the Powerful is a senior undergraduate seminar consisting of classes with 10-20 students and has been taught on different occasions as a selected topics course in the Criminology and Sociology Departments, it could also be adapted into a graduate level class.
