Reclamation of fracking wastewater at its high discharge temperature is a global energy and environmental challenge. Herein, the utilization of thermosetting polyurethane-nanosilicon sponges with thermal stability up to 220 °C is demonstrated for reclaiming emulsified oily wastewater between 30 and 100 °C. The sponge achieved 92–96% removal efficiency within 5 min where efficiency of 27% was increased by melting wax crystallites in the crude oil. The adsorbed oil was extracted from the sponge by rinsing with Heptol. These results show that thermoset polymers are promising high-temperature sorbents to reclaim fracking effluents and achieve Net-Zero goals in the oil industry.
