Abstract
Basé sur les élections de tutelle du district de Montréal au début du XIXe siècle, cet article interroge les conceptions genrées de l’autorité domestique dans un contexte de pluralisme culturel croissant. Il montre que le pouvoir masculin se construit suivant deux modèles distincts : l’un se tisse dans le maillage de la sociabilité locale des Canadiens, l’autre s’affirme à travers la maîtrise individuelle du destin de familles anglophones, en marge de la tutelle française. En se soumettant, comme les femmes de toutes origines, à l’administration tutélaire, les pères canadiens se plaçaient dans une position subalterne sur l’échelle d’un pouvoir masculin britannique symbolisé par l’indépendance économique et politique du chef de ménage.
