Abstract
Baseball, basketball, bridge, chess, and the board game Monopoly have rules. Chemistry has formulas and shorthand has outlines to memorize. Traffic laws help to save lives. When people know the rules, they know what to do and what to expect. The alphabetic method is familiar because telephone directories, dictionaries, and library cataloging systems use this method. Geographic filing, like subject filing, depends on alphabetical arrangement. National and international organizations that use the geographical method include export/import firms, shipping and transportation firms, vehicle rentals, publishers, and federal and state governments that interact with multinational organizations. The primary method starts with the first number and continues sequentially through to the end. The choice and placement of digits can communicate their meaning. Mixing letters and numbers may categorize records by demographics or by marketing and product classifications. Two countries that currently use the alphanumeric method for their postal deliveries are Canada and Great Britain.
