Abstract
Claims that a new degenerative disease lies behind a regional cluster of unexplained neurological symptoms in Canada1 have been dealt a blow after the autopsy reports of eight patients from the cluster in New Brunswick province attributed their deaths to known diseases. Gerard Jansen, a neuropathologist at the University of Ottawa, presented the abstract of his findings to the Canadian Association of Neuropathologists’ annual meeting in October, and parts of his presentation were passed to the media by unknown sources this week. “In these eight patients no evidence for a prion disease was found, nor novel pathology,” he said. The deaths were attributed to Alzheimer’s disease, Lewy body dementia, metastatic cancer, frontal lobe dementia, and vascular disease. “We suggest that these eight patients represent a group of misclassified clinical diagnoses,” Jansen concluded, hoping that the findings “will bring some clarity” to a question that has “significantly disturbed the medical community.” New Brunswick’s health minister Dorothy Shephard told a press conference on 27 …
