Abstract
Sous la gouverne de Duncan Campbell Scott, les Affaires indiennes ont entrepris, en 1925, un ambitieux projet de restauration et de préservation des mâts totémiques en Colombie-Britannique. Deux ans plus tard, la Loi sur les Indiens a été modifiée pour mieux protéger ces objets patrimoniaux dans les réserves. De telles initiatives apparaissent curieuses a priori, dans la mesure où les Affaires indiennes déployaient à la même époque des efforts sans précédent pour accélérer l’acculturation et, éventuellement, l’émancipation des Autochtones. Une analyse des archives des Affaires indiennes et des publications gouvernementales entourant ce projet montre que la dimension culturelle autochtone associée aux mâts totémiques préoccupait moins les hauts dirigeants que le souci de préserver et de protéger de la convoitise étrangère des objets devenus, au Canada, une source de revenus sur le plan touristique et un symbole de l’identité nationale. En cela, une telle initiative concordait avec le paradigme guidant la mise en oeuvre de la politique indienne de façon à privilégier, à court terme, les intérêts matériels de l’État au détriment de ceux des Autochtones – et à plus long terme l’objectif d’émancipation.
