Abstract
This course is based on Elder’s five life course principles: life long development; timing; linked lives; historical time and place; and human agency. We will employ these principles to inform our readings and discussions of the novels, and our critiques of sociological work on the family. Objectives: 1. To familiarize you with the life course perspective on the sociology of the family. 2. To enable you to examine substantive issues in the sociology of the family in depth, using a sociologically-informed theoretical framework based on Elder’s five life course principles. 3. To expose you to advanced theoretical and empirical work on the sociology of the family. 4. To enable you to read and interpret novels about families utilizing the life course perspective. 5. To provide you with the opportunity to conduct your own sociological research project on a substantive issue in the sociology of the family, using a life course perspective.
