 Neste trabalho, desenvolvemos um estudo sobre o fenômeno fonológico da monotongação, no âmbito do Mestrado Profissional em Letras (PROFLETRAS) da Universidade de Pernambuco no ano de 2018. Buscamos, aqui, sobretudo, investigar como esse fenômeno ocorre na escrita de estudantes de 4o e 5o ano do ensino fundamental em escolas públicas localizadas em ambiente rural e em ambiente urbano. Pudemos evidenciar, através dos dados obtidos, dentre os contextos linguísticos e extralinguísticos observados, os que mais favorecem a aplicação da regra da monotongação, no grupo pesquisado. Como metodologia para obtenção dos dados, aplicamos duas vezes a proposta de ditado mudo e em seguida a proposta da produção de texto a partir do gênero fábula. O corpus foi composto, portanto, de cento e vinte atividades realizadas por quarenta alunos de ambos os sexos. Os resultados da observação demonstram que o processo de monotongação está condicionado, no grupo estudado, principalmente, a fatores linguísticos.
