Dans cette étude de cas, il s’agit de mieux comprendre comment les anciens détenus que j’ai interrogés m’ont témoigné de leur expérience carcérale, à travers leurs « souvenirs emprisonnés ». Pour cela, je montre que, même si certains souvenirs sont de véritables « boîtes noires », les émotions jouent un rôle souvent essentiel dans la construction du passé carcéral, c’est-à-dire tel qu’il se donne à voir dans les témoignages d’anciens détenus. Pour saisir ce phénomène, il m’a fallu d’abord chercher, puis proposer, une définition opératoire du concept de « traduction », afin de mettre au jour aussi bien la part intentionnelle de ces souvenirs et des émotions qu’ils suscitent, que la part sociale de cette mémoire autobiographique.
