L’auteur s’intéresse à l’actualité dans l’Angleterre aux débuts du XVIIE siècle, période pendant laquelle les news furent une thématique aussi bien des premiers « journaux », les corantos, que des pièces de théâtre, dont celles qui se préoccupent des nouvellistes et du commerce des nouvelles. Il est question de « nouvelles fabriquées », mais non pas de fake news. L’auteur explore les corantos de Londres des années 1620, emmenés par le dramaturge Ben Jonson qui satirisait l’appétit croissant pour des nouvelles bien curieusement fabriquées. L’attention de l’auteur porte sur les nouvelles de l’étranger et leur provenance, notamment parce que la parution des corantos à Londres se produisit presqu’au même moment que les débuts de la guerre de Trente Ans (1618-1648).
