Para todas las familias, el nacimiento es una transformacion de la identidad. En este contexto, «convertirse en abuelo» es algo todavia poco estudiado. Los autores realizaron varias entrevistas conjuntas con padres y abuelos en una poblacion de Quebec. Los resultados ilustran los problemas de identidad que surgen en torno al nacimiento entre los padres y sus propios padres. Los padres expresan sus expectativas sobre el apoyo estos ultimos que podrian prestar. Los abuelos, que parecen sobre todo esperar una relacion con el bebe, prestarian este apoyo para encontrar su propio lugar en la economia familiar. Con diferencias segun el genero, los abuelos contribuyen asi a construir, gracias a esta ayuda, una cuna psiquica familiar que une en un primer circulo a los padres con su bebe. En la perinatalidad, esta «funcion» de los abuelos permitiria prever la especificidad de un segundo circulo en torno al bebe, tambien especifico de las intervenciones de los profesionales.
