Abstract
Anthony Eden’s name will be forever associated with the Suez debacle of November 1956. Barely two months after Britain’s disastrous attack on Egypt, he had been forced to quit as prime minister—the post for which he had waited patiently while serving as Churchill’s foreign secretary. His reputation for “honesty and integrity” was destroyed. But as Kevin Ruane and Matthew Jones show in this masterly and intricate account of Anglo-American diplomacy, Anthony Eden, Anglo-American Relations and the 1954 Indochina Crisis, if one focuses on the Indochina crisis of 1954 instead of Suez, a very different Eden emerges. As the crisis came to a head at the Geneva Conference, Eden stepped out from Churchill’s shadow to broker a regional peace that also averted the danger of a much larger and more dangerous conflict, even a nuclear war.
