Abstract
L’auteure pose un regard neuf sur l’évolution des cercueils à Québec à partir du milieu du xixe siècle. Après avoir découvert deux spécimens en bois munis d’une vitre conservés de génération en génération par la famille de Cécile et Robert Lépine, elle consulte les archives de la maison funéraire Germain Lépine fondée en 1845 dans le quartier Saint-Roch et ayant eu sa place d’affaires au 715 rue Saint-Vallier Est jusqu’en 1975. Sa démarche permet de retracer différentes catégories de cercueils et de discerner le rôle que ceux-ci jouaient dans les rites mortuaires, notamment ceux des enfants et des adolescents.
