Le suicide et sa prévention sont considérés comme des enjeux de santé publique. Cette perspective jouxte une compréhension multifactorielle des phénomènes de santé dans nos sociétés, et la mobilisation autour des déterminants pour lesquels des actions peuvent être posées. La santé publique a connu des succès face aux maladies infectieuses puis face à des maladies chroniques comme l’hypertension. Le phénomène est ensuite appréhendé en chiffres, à l’aide de données québécoises, canadiennes et internationales. Les politiques populationnelles de prévention du suicide sont généralement multimodales, elles impliquent souvent des stratégies pour l’amélioration des services de santé mentale. Le succès de ces stratégies repose sur leur application constante et la surveillance de cette application.
