An integrated methodology has been developed to asses thermal mechanical caprock integrity issues for steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) processes in Alberta heavy oil reservoirs. Thermal recovery process in heavy oil reservoirs can comprise caprock integrity and be detrimental. Casing failures could occur if large strains develop along weak discontinuities in the caprock. High pressure and large volume cyclic steam stimulation could also breach the caprock along discontinuities or via a poorly-cemented wellbore. Since the SAGD process is run at lower steam pressures, it is not generally through to pose the same risk to caprock integrity. In this study, the geological, geomechanical and reservoir engineering information acquired from logs, cores and well tests were used to create a numerical model of the reservoir and its associated caprock. Different numerical tools are used to develop a representative model, depending on the nature of the caprock and the reservoir. 3 figs.
