itral valve regurgitation (MR) is not a single disease entity but rather a final common pathway resulting from one of several different mechanisms.MR is divided into primary and secondary depending on whether the pathology is valvular or nonvalvular.The differences between primary and secondary MR, specifically treatment options and outcomes, are now well recognized.Sex-based differences in mitral regurgitation, however, are less well understood.Much of this knowledge gap is likely related to low female representation in randomized trials and data sets and the generalization of results in males to the female population.Overcoming these limitations to improve our overall understanding remains a challenge.
