This Special Issue in IET Generation, Transmission & Distribution invited authors of selected high-quality papers presented in the SPIES 2020 conference to submit the extended versions of their papers. After a rigorous peer review process, the following five papers under various topic areas such as (i) power system control, operation, and management, (ii) impact of renewables on distribution network, and (iii) smart grid vulnerability, cybersecurity, and protection were accepted for publication in this Special Issue. ‘Voltage control and virtual synchronous generator control of HVDC interconnection line for improving stability of power system including large-scale wind farm’ by Nakamura et al. proposes a new control strategy composed of the voltage control for suppressing the voltage sag and the virtual synchronous generator (VSG) control based on the proportional-integral-differential (PID) fuzzy logic control (FLC) for maintaining the frequency stability which is performed by high voltage direct current (HVDC) interconnection line. The aim of the new control strategy is to improve the stability of the entire power system with large-scale integration of renewable energy systems, whereas Ahmed et al. deals with the development of advanced grid-synchronization technique for unbalanced and distorted grid in ‘A quasi open-loop robust three-phase grid-synchronization technique for non-ideal grid’. This paper proposes an extended self-tuning filter (STF) by analysing the standard STF in the state-space framework. To make the proposed ESTF grid-following, a robust open-loop frequency estimator is also applied. The closed-loop system enjoys excellent filtering benefit from the extended STF side while taking advantage of the fast convergence speed property of the open-loop frequency estimation technique. ‘Optimal distributed generation and battery energy storage units integration in distribution systems considering power generation uncertainty’ by Khasanov et al. proposes an application of the recent metaheuristic rider optimization algorithm (ROA) for determining the optimal size and location of renewable energy sources (RES) including wind turbine (WT), photovoltaic (PV), and biomass-based distributed generation (DG) units in distribution systems (DS). The main objective function is to minimize the total power and energy losses. The results show that the developed approach accelerates to the near-optimal solution seamlessly, and in steady convergence characteristics compared with other techniques. Also, ‘A multi-objective optimization for planning of networked microgrid using a game theory for peer-to-peer energy trading scheme’ by Ali et al. proposes a multi-objective optimization technique for the planning of a networked microgrid based on peer-to-grid (P2G) and peer-to-peer (P2P) energy trading schemes. Two different criteria including annual profit and energy index of reliability are taken into consideration to form a multi-objective function. The results show that the outcomes are maximum when both criteria are considered in the optimization and P2P energy trading is carried out. ‘Exploring cybersecurity issues in 5G enabled electric vehicle charging station with deep learning’ by Basnet and Ali analyses the impact of various cyber-attacks such as the false data injection (FDI), distributed denial of services (DDoS) attacks, etc., on the operation of an electric vehicle charging station (EVCS). EVCS needs to communicate with the incoming EVs for scheduling, charging EVs for authentication and authorization, and grids for efficiently utilizing the available energy through wired/wireless media. Therefore, EVCS is always vulnerable to cyber-attacks. The paper proposes the novel stacked long short-term memory (LSTM) based intrusion detection system (IDS) to detect the stealthy cyber-attacks that bypass the cyber layer and go unnoticed in the monitoring system with nearly 100% detection accuracy. All the papers selected for this Special Issue show significant contributions in the interesting areas of power system operation, stability, grid synchronization, distributed generation system, optimization, microgrid control, and cybersecurity issues in electric vehicle charging station. All papers deal with novel approaches and control methodologies. Thus, the papers will be useful and provide guidelines for researchers working in the broader areas of power generation, transmission, and distribution systems. The Lead Guest Editor Dr. Mohd. Hasan Ali is an Associate Professor at the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department in the University of Memphis (UofM), USA. He leads the Electric Power and Energy Systems (EPES) Laboratory at the UofM. His research interests include smart grid and microgrid systems, cybersecurity issues in modern power grids, electric vehicle charging station, renewable energy, and energy storage systems. Dr. Bala Venkatesh is a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Ryerson University, Canada. He is both founding academic director and head of the Centre for Urban Energy (CUE) at Ryerson University. He specializes in electric power systems with interests in transmission and distribution systems, renewables, energy storage and smart grids. Dr. Kashem M. Muttaqi is a full Professor and the discipline leader of Electrical Engineering at the School of Electrical, Computer and Telecommunications Engineering, University of Wollongong, Australia. He is the director of the ARC Training Centre in Energy Technologies for Future Grids. His research interests include distributed generation, solid state transformer, power converters, power electronic applications, renewable energy, solar PV, wind turbines, wave energy, electrical vehicles, smart grids, microgrids, standalone power supply, power grids, and power system planning and control. He is a fellow of IET. Dr. Ahmed Abu-Siada is an Associate Professor and discipline lead of the Electrical and Computer Engineering, Curtin University, Australia. His research interests include power electronics, power system stability, condition monitoring, and power quality. He is editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and regular reviewer for various IEEE Transactions. Dr. Jahangir Hossain is currently working as an Associate Professor at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) in the School of Electrical and Data Engineering. His research interests include renewable energy integration and stabilization, voltage stability, micro grids and smart grids, robust control, electric vehicles, building energy management systems, and energy storage systems. Dr. Ali Arefi is an Associate Professor in Murdoch University, Australia. He has six years’ experiences with electric distribution industry. His research interests are mainly in the areas of sustainable electric distribution planning, distribution optimization, power quality, state estimation, and energy efficiency. Dr. Shunfu Lin is currently a Professor at the College of Electrical Engineering, Shanghai University of Electric Power. He worked for the Corporate Technology of Siemens Limited China as a research scientist in power monitoring and control from 2007 to 2009. His research interests include power quality and smart grid technologies of LV distribution system.
