Abstract
En 1814 on établit un lien étroit entre Napoléon et les formes de théâtre populaire, renforçant ainsi son manque d’authenticité. Des commentateurs comme Nodier rejetèrent le théâtre populaire comme n’étant fait que pour les oreilles et les yeux. C’est un spectacle qui n’offre que des « émotions tièdes et communes », autrement dit simulées et illusoires. En mettant l’accent sur l’illusion et la fausseté du théâtre forain, et en rapprochant Napoléon et ses proches (Cambacerès par exemple) de la commedia dell'arte en particulier, les pamphlétaires et les dessinateurs renforcent l’infériorité et le ridicule du régime impérial. Or, sous les Cent-Jours les bonapartistes ripostent et réclament rapidement les références théâtrales à leur tour. Cet article tracera l’évolution et les métamorphoses de cette métaphore afin de mieux saisir les polyvalences et la plasticité au cœur de cette imagerie.
