anesthetized + atVNS) conditions.In basal conditions, we did not detect any difference in c-Fos expression density between genotypes.Furthermore, anesthesia enhanced c-Fos density in comparison with basal state independently of the genotype, especially in prefrontal areas, locus coeruleus and nucleus tractus solitarius.Finally, atVNS did not modify c-Fos density in any of the areas studied compared with anesthetized mice.Correlation-based network analysis showed well-organized pattern of connectivity in WT mice compared to Fmr1KO in basal condition.Additionally, anesthesia induced a loss of connectivity between homotopic areas within the two hemispheres in both genotypes, although acute atVNS increased the communication between brainstem and prefrontal and hippocampal areas compared to anesthetized controls.Together, our results provide new comprehension in the effects of atVNS on brain functional connectivity in mice with diverse cognition, and extend our knowledge of the biological mechanisms underlying the therapeutic efficacy of non-invasive vagus nerve electrostimulation technique.
