Abstract
Dans L’adieu à la littérature. Histoire d’une dévalorisation, xviii e - xx e siècle, William Marx rappelle que la « poésie du désastre » était encore possible au xviii e siècle lors du tremblement de terre de Lisbonne car « les pouvoirs de consolation faisaient partie des attributions immémoriales de la poésie », mais qu’elle est devenue impossible au xx e siècle pour la Grande Guerre puis pour la Shoah. En témoigne la « trop fameuse » phrase d’Adorno : « écrire un poème après Auschwitz est barbare ». William Marx prend acte de l’impossibilité pour la poésie du xx e siècle de dire la catastrophe, que celle-ci désigne un événement naturel ou un massacre. Je voudrais revenir sur ce constat en montrant que la peinture du passé a pu offrir un recours pour dire ce qui apparaissait comme un indicible. Je fais la double hypothèse, à partir de trois approches d’écrivains du xx e siècle (Claude Simon, Michel Leiris et André du Bouchet), que la puissance de certaines oeuvres d’art du passé tient à leur capacité d’accueil d’événements qui ne les ont pas inspirées et que la poésie, par sa modalité intempestive, est nécessaire et précieuse précisément lorsqu’il s’agit de se tourner vers l’art des maîtres anciens pour exprimer des catastrophes présentes.
