La faune des vertébrés inférieurs (poissons) des Grès de Gaspé était presque inconnue il y a 50 ans, sauf un Cephalaspis ostéostracé (poisson sans mâchoires) décrit en 1954 par Russell, dont Belles-Isles a changé le genre en 2011. En 1969, Pageau a décrit d’autres Ostéostracés : des Placodermes Arthrodires (poissons avec mâchoires), des Acanthodiens (poissons avec épines osseuses aux nageoires) et des Sélaciens (requins). Dans cet article, 2 spécimens rares d’Arthrodires sont décrits dans leur contexte géologique, un milieu deltaïque fait de dépôts provenant de l’érosion d’une chaîne de montagnes en pleine surrection. L’un est le toit crânien d’un bouclier céphalique, l’autre est un bouclier thoracique. Ils sont rares parce que ce sont des spécimens articulés (le bouclier thoracique a même la plaque spinale en place) et qu’ils proviennent de la formation géologique York River des Grès de Gaspé à L’ Anse-à-Brillant, au sud de la baie de Gaspé, ce qui est nouveau. Ces spécimens confirment que la formation York River à L’ Anse-à-Brillant est du Dévonien inférieur d’âge emsien (407-394 Ma) et que la formation géologique Battery Point à Cap-aux-Os, au nord de la baie de Gaspé, est proche du sommet de la formation York River, donc aussi d’âge emsien.
