El present estudi tracta de desmentir la creenca, fomentada des del poder politic, que el diplomatic Azara va donar l’esquena a Pius VI en moments dificils, quan es produi l’entrada de les tropes franceses a Roma, amb la corresponent proclamacio de la Republica a Roma i l’exili del sant Pare el 1798. Un breu estat de la questio recull les investigacions realitzades sobre aquest tema. A continuacio, s’interpreta el contingut d’una seria de cartes, encara inedites, procedents de l’Arxiu Torres i Amat, per exemple, entre Azara i el ministre espanyol a Genova, Leandro Gomez Teran, i el plenipotenciari enviat per Carles IV per a assistir al sant Pare a l’exili, Pedro Gomez Labrador, entre d’altres. Aquestes cartes donen testimoni de la seva preocupacio i confirmen el seu suport i amistat per a donar una sortida i una destinacio dignes, tot i els esdeveniments bel·lics que se succeien sense treva.
