Abstract
Corriger les « erreurs » de Vingt mille lieues sous les mers : telle est la devise des auteurs ayant raconté leurs premières plongées en scaphandre autonome dans les années 1950. Pourtant, la promotion d’un discours scientifique neutre, purgé des invraisemblances associées au roman de Jules Verne, bute contre le recours inévitable au langage et à des effets littéraires pour exprimer l’ivresse des profondeurs et la métamorphose du plongeur. À partir de Plongées sans câble (1954) de Philippe Tailliez, L’aventure sous-marine (1951) et Les portes de la mer (1953) de Philippe Diolé, entre autres, cet article analyse d’abord la manière dont la surface de l’eau symbolise une frontière étanche sous laquelle l’océan demeure mystérieux et inépuisable. Il examine ensuite le rapport politique violent qui s’exprime à travers un ensemble d’hyperboles promouvant la conquête de la mer non seulement dans ces récits parus il y a plus de soixante ans, mais dans le discours océanographique contemporain.
