Protection of DC distribution systems poses a significant challenge due to the absence of reliable and fast protection devices that can cater to the protection requirements of DC networks. This paper proposes a modular hybrid circuit breaker (HCB) architecture for DC distribution systems. Based on the idea of voltage and current sharing between cascade and parallel connection, it uses HCBs with low voltage and current capability to apply on higher voltage and current applications. The proposed scheme features high reliability, high flexibility, and a low-cost design. In this paper, the design procedures including voltage and current balancing techniques used are presented in detail. The effectiveness of the proposed architecture is successfully verified in a 5kW experimental setup. All the experimental results show a good agreement with the theoretical knowledge.
