Abstract
Widespread use of the Internet has led to the use of the termonline communitiesto describe a sensibility of digitally mediated social life distinct from traditional or offline social life. The oldest online communities are premised on a strong sense of techno‐communalistvirtual community, but today most online communities do not imagine digital technology represents a radical break with the past, and are more about involving new forms of mediation within traditional social interaction rather than establishing a new frontier of experimental group living. Social networking is a structural force that has shaped and influenced all kinds of online communities, as well as produced within them new forms of deviance and civic consciousness.
