Microwave (MW) plasmas sources are described from low gas pressure to high gas pressures in Nitrogen (N 2 ) and Argon (Ar). This chapter focuses on the discharges sustained by microwave fields including surface waves at low gas pressure. It also focuses on the comparison of Ar metastable atom density in microwave and DC discharges as a function of pressure in the 0.02–1 Torr pressure range. To gain a better understanding of surface wave discharge plasmas, it is worth knowing the influence of the radial distribution of the MW electric field intensity of a surfatron plasma on the radial profile of the thin and absorbed line emissions that characterize the discharge. The chapter explains ionization of N 2 by electron collisions in surfatron and surfaguide cavities. André Ricard explains that the experimental setup is to obtain high electron density in N 2 UHF plasmas.
