La majorité des recherches sur la non-maternité ont été réalisées à partir des années 1980 et visaient à éclaircir le choix de ne pas avoir d’enfant. Ces recherches ont souvent mis en avant les jugements et les pressions expérimentés par les femmes refusant la maternité (Aubert 1987 ; Campbell 1985 ; Carmel 1990 ; Ireland 1993 ; Morell 1994 ; Veevers 1980 ; Vissing 2002). Partant de ce constat, nous avons voulu savoir si les femmes des générations précédentes ayant expérimenté la non-maternité avaient subi les mêmes pressions pour se conformer à l’idéal maternel. Nous avons recueilli les récits de vie de dix-huit Québécoises sans enfant nées entre 1930 et 1950, cette génération de femmes correspondant au moment dans le XXe siècle où la non-maternité était la plus marginale d’un point de vue statistique au Québec (Carmel 1990 ; Prioux et Girard 2010). Les témoignages recueillis ont permis de constater que, contrairement aux femmes des générations subséquentes, ces femmes n’ont que très rarement vécu des pressions sur le mariage ou sur la maternité (Labrie 2015). Cet article aborde les réflexions ou les circonstances ayant mené ces femmes à ne pas avoir d’enfant, que ce soit par rejet de la maternité ou par circonstances de la vie. Leurs témoignages montrent que la plupart d’entre elles font référence à une forme de destin pour décrire leur parcours, même lorsque l’absence d’enfants résulte de leurs choix. Cette notion semble contribuer à exclure la question des regrets au fil de leur vie, du moins jusqu’à ce que survienne une perte d’autonomie.
