Abstract
Pour nombre de Mexicains, la fin de vie et la mort adviennent dans un espace social, juridique, administratif et géographique binational. À partir de deux cas d’étude emblématiques tirés d’entretiens réalisés avec des couples ruraux de plus de soixante ans originaires de l’État d’Oaxaca, cet article interroge les effets du cadre administratif et juridique binational sur les pratiques d’accompagnement du migrant âgé malade ou défunt par sa conjointe, et sur le choix du lieu de fin de vie du migrant. L’auteure conclut qu’à la fin de la vie, malgré des différences entre les situations des couples et quelles que soient les contraintes du contexte binational, un nouvel équilibre s’établit au profit de l’épouse du migrant chargée de prendre soin du corps malade ou mort de son mari. Une telle situation contraste avec la relation de conjugalité à distance pendant la période migratoire, dominée par l’absence du mari et par le manque de prise de la femme sur l’organisation du temps et de l’espace du couple.
