Abstract The peaked spectrum (PS) radio sources are sub‐kpc in size and have a peak in the radio spectrum. The compact steep specrum (CSS) sources range from about 1 kpc to an adopted upper limit on projected linear size of 20 kpc. Because of their galactic‐scale range of size, the PS and CSS radio sources interact strongly with the ISM of this host galaxy. This means that the PS and CSS sources can be a significant source of the AGN feedback. The PS and CSS sources are a key phase in radio source evolution. Yet, there is substantial uncertainty regarding the origin of these sources, their lifetimes, and their evolution. There are many interesting open questions regarding the PS and CSS radio sources. Here, in this short introduction to the topic, I focus on the origin stories for these sources and how progress might be made.
