En este trabajo se analiza la participacion del sector privado en las areas que abarcan los diversos subsectores relacionados con el agua, especificamente el sector del agua embotellada, donde se resalta la gran concentracion de estas actividades en pocas empresas, sobre todo europeas, y su modo de actuar en America del Norte a traves de las diversas fusiones y alianzas con empresas locales. En la primera parte del articulo se analiza como el proceso de globalizacion, que ha ido acompanado de la apertura comercial, ha permitido la incursion de grandes empresas a traves de sus inversiones en todo el mundo, operando a diversos niveles ya sea en la explotacion y la distribucion mundial del recurso, y por lo tanto en la concentracion de las actividades relacionadas con el agua en pocas empresas. En la segunda parte se examina la participacion de estas grandes empresas transnacionales en el sector del agua embotellada, la forma en que han ido ganando terreno en Mexico, Estados Unidos y Canada, y como en poco tiempo esta actividad se ha ido concentrando en el espacio que denominamos America del Norte, donde no hay hasta el momento limites a la participacion del capital privado ni a la explotacion y distribucion de un recurso vital y estrategico.
